It ‘been a week since I started this blog and it is again time to indulge thinking about the world of board games. For those accustomed to chewing games every day may seem trivial but this space is dedicated especially to those approaching with curiosity this world, perhaps driven by the enthusiasm of a friend, by an article on a blog or curiosity aroused by the colored boxes in a shop.
How much do these games cost!
The prices of a good boardgame are ranging from 25 to 50 euros and can sometimes seem like an obstacle: it’s worth it? Sometimes is also difficult tofind good boardghames since not all cities have stores.
Immediately once again the comparison with other fields of entertainment: going to the movies for a family of 4 people in my town costs about 30 euros (counting two children under 12 years), something more if the film is 3D. For DVDs and Blu-ray the cost is more difficult to estimate but a novelty usually costs between 20 and 30 euros. Going to the theater is much more expensive and also go to a concert. Movies, concerts and theater are important cultural experiences for both adults and children. But then why do so many scruples buying a game that costs 40 euros? Is not playing with adults and children an important cultural and educational experience as well ? An it is also fun! Among other things, a game, a good game, has a remarkable longevity and can be played and replayed many times. It ‘nice to go to the movies or the theater, have a couple of hours of entertainment with friends and family. Why, I ask myself, so much reticence in buying a game that can offer dozens of hours of leisure?
The problem is sometimes the choice: which game? And if I do not like? The same problem when we choose a book or a movie. Fortunately, however, there are many newspapers and magazines writing about books and movies: an article here, a review there, a good website or friend who has seen or read, a commentary on the radio or television and we have an idea of what to expect and what may suit our tastes. But nobody talks about games. Only spot on the usual old classics but no reviews, descriptions or articles apart from geeks website.
Look for a shop in your town, talk to the shopkeeper, read the descriptions behind the box, let groped by what most tickles your curiosity.
Perhaps search the internet or ask a friend. We are close to Christmas and what better time to give as a gift a game to play in the afternoon of celebration, in the evening with friends or with children. Going to see a boring movie, not too fun show or a concert below expectations: how many times will it happen? And you stopped going to the cinema, theater or concerts? Do not let a wrong game, a failed attempt, take away the taste to play or try to find the game for you.
My advice is: as soon as you can go and bring your children to the cinema, theater and concerts and also buy some good books and good games: for them and for you! Invest on your culture and that of your children.
Next week I will start to give you some advice on how to choose the right games.
Good play to all of you
