How many times have you started walking along Meditteranean Avenue and Baltic Avenue, darting in front of the blue then turn right onto St. Charles Palace and right again after the free parking straight until Malvin Gardens, then passing the prison and take the luxurious way leading to Boardwalk and then right again … and Go! … and so, always the same streets, the same game since you were born. The game you played by your dad and maybe even by your grandfather … what a bore! I never want to draw anymore from Chance or Community Chest! Do not want to have to destroy the Red Army or to decide which is the third continent to conquer after Europe and Oceania. I do not want to know if Mr. Purple has used the candlestick in the kitchen, being sure that in the end the winner will be the best dice roller. I’m not good at drawing, I do not want to answer quiz television and I want to talk about using all the vocabulary words. There are no other board games? I have to necessarily buy a console to do something new?
Monopoly was first published in 1935, Clue in 1948 and Risk in 1959.
In 1935 the hit parade winner was Cheek to Cheek by Fred Astaire in 1948 Dinah Shore Buttons & Bows and in 1959 Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin. How many of you still listen? How often do you hear if some-one gift you or, even better, you would dream to gift this songs for Christmas to a friend or a relative? Not even in a new box with a luxury glossy cover?
In 1935 Oscar was awarded to “It Happened One Night” by Frank Capra in 1948 to “Invisible Barrier” by Elia Kazan in 1959 and “Gigi” Vincente Minelli. Are you still looking this movies ? Recommend them to whoever asks, “which movie can I watch tomorrow with friends ?”. I love movies and I’ve never seen one of this!
The board games market instead (at least the mass market), more unique than rare, wheel around the same games years after years: titles which have become best-sellers, part of the common imaginary, proposed and replicated ad nauseum. Of course people get tired of board-gaming and looks for something else, more challenging, more varied, more modern.
Have you ever wondered what happens turn left after Boardwalk k?
Fortunately, there is a universe of games varied, lively, funny, charming. A world of games, players, authors and publishers with events, awards, personalities, websites and blogs. A universe ignored by newspapers, magazines, and mainstream media that are asking themselves amazed by the volume of sales of Call of Duty or why 10 years old childrens spend hours in front of the Wii and Play Station.
I decided to start this blog to talk about what is my passion: board games. I will try to show, step by step, this world to friends and curious, passionate and not, hopefully, with my little contribution, next year Santa’s sack will bring finally something new !
